Join Joseph Pitawanakwat, Andrés Jiménez and Junaid Khan (Creators Garden Birds) in a discussion about the depth of ecological knowledge housed in Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe language) names. Whereas western scientific naming focuses on the most obvious of physical characteristics, geographic range, or paying homage to Europeans, Anishinaabemowin allows us to learn about the roles these incredible flying beings play within our world. In turn, we can learn how best to help and support their populations for generations to come.

This session, offered in partnership with the Outdoor Learning School and Store, is a complimentary offering for all those who registered for the Winter Anishinaabemowin course. If you are registered for this course you do not need to register again.

This can also be attended as a standalone session. Registration is available at no cost to all Indigenous people, and on a sliding scale to non-Indigenous participants. These registration fees help to cover the costs of future Indigenous language courses, including paying teachers, facilitators and Elders appropriately, and makes the learning available to those whose language was stolen.

Attend this event on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, from 5:00–6:30 PM.
